Hot, dry, and windy. That is the prediction for this year’s wildfire season which starts in May and continues through the fall. These three conditions can have devastating effects as Central Texas residents discovered during 2011 when numerous wildfires started throughout the region including the Bastrop Complex Fire in Bastrop County, the Steiner Ranch Fire in Travis County, and the Moonglow Fire in Williamson County. Fire and emergency management officials in the Capital Area Council of Governments (CAPCOG) 10-county region want to remind residents to be prepared for this wildfire season.

May is full of fun activities in Williamson County! Bring the family to  Pioneer Day with the Williamson Museum in Old Settlers Park or the Austin Area Train Show at the WilCo Expo. Mark your calendars for election days May 5 and 22. Be sure to check our website for your sample ballot before you go. There are also opportunities to make your opinions heard with surveys and open houses. It is a shower of activities!

The Williamson County Comprehensive Parks Master Plan is in the process of being updated. In April, a series of four public townhall meetings was held to see the results of the citizen survey and share preliminary recommendations of the proposed plan. Now, the public has the opportunity to view the meeting materials online and email comments to parkandrec@wilco.org through Monday, April 30, 2018. View the Open House boards or the Trail Map.

Williamson County and the Upper Brushy Creek WCID will hold a joint ribbon cutting on improvements to Dam 7 and the Brushy Creek Regional Trail (BCRT) around the dam. The event will be held on Wednesday, April 18, 10 a.m. at the overlook along the trail on top of Dam 7. The event is free and open to the public. Dam 7 is located on Brushy Creek by the City of Cedar Park’s Brushy Creek Lake Park, 3300 Brushy Creek Rd, Cedar Park, Texas. Parking is available at Brushy Creek Lake Park with a shuttle available to the overlook from the eastern parking lot. The last shuttle will leave for the event at 9:45 a.m. Walking distance to the event along the BCRT is approximate 0.6 miles and 10- to 15-minute walk. Allow time to walk (if preferred along trail) and wear comfortable shoes. Please note that no restrooms are available at the ribbon cutting site; however, there are restrooms in Brushy Creek Lake Park.

Williamson County is hosting Learn to Fish Day in the Southwest Williamson County Regional Park, located at 3005 CR 175, Leander, Texas on Saturday, April 21, 2018, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.  Children of all ages will be able to spend time learning various fishing tips and techniques from local experts.  The Learn to Fish Day event is free and open to the public.
