Public Appeal Process Open on New FEMA Floodplain Updates

The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has issued a preliminary Flood Insurance Study (FIS) report, and where applicable, a Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM), reflecting proposed flood hazard determinations within Williamson County. The restudy includes the cities of Austin, Cedar Park, Coupland, Georgetown, Hutto, Leander, Round Rock and Taylor, as well as the unincorporated areas of Williamson County. The public is invited to review the information and appeal the proposed information over a 90-day period.

Flood hazard revisions may include the addition or modification of any Base Flood Elevation (BFE), Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) boundary or zone designation, or regulatory floodway provided on the FIRM. With this reevaluation, more than 300 properties have either moved into or out of the floodplain.

These flood hazard updates are the basis for the floodplain management measures that each community is required to either adopt or show evidence of being already in effect or in order to qualify or remain qualified for participation in the National Flood Insurance Program.

The preliminary FIRM and FIS report are available at the Williamson County Central Maintenance Facility, 3151 S.E. Inner Loop, Suite B, Georgetown, Texas. In addition, the FIRM and FIS report are available for review through an interactive mapping site on-line at http://maps.riskmap6.com.

Before these determinations are effective for floodplain management purposes, you have an opportunity to appeal the proposed information. This appeal period began February 15, 2018. All comments and/or appeals must be submitted to The Honorable Dan A. Gattis, Williamson County Judge, 710 S. Main Street, Suite 101, Georgetown, TX 78626 and received no later than 90 days after the second publication of the notice in the local newspaper which occurred on February 15, 2018.

For information on the statutory 90-day period provided for appeals, as well as a complete listing of the communities affected and the locations where copies of the FIRM are available for review, please visit FEMA’s website at www.fema.gov/plan/prevent/fhm/bfe or call the FEMA map information exchange toll free at 1-877-FEMA MAP (1-877-336-2627).
