Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter Hosts its Second Weekend Whirl

Summer is a time for love, and what better way to celebrate than bringing home a new cat or dog? Luckily, the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter (WCRAS) is here to help.

Beginning Friday, June 25, WCRAS is hosting the second-annual “Weekend Whirl,” which allows prospective pet owners the opportunity to bring pets home for the weekend with the goal of permanent adoption.

The Weekend Whirl serves as an extension of the WCRAS Foster Program, a lifesaving initiative with the focus of saving the lives of the young, elderly, injured, and long-stay dogs and cats of the shelter by finding them temporary placement in loving homes.

The first step of the Weekend Whirl begins with seeing the adoptable pets at wilcopets.org. Next, interested participants can visit WCRAS, located 1855 SE Inner Loop in Georgetown, where they can meet and greet the animals available for adoption.

Through this process, potential adopters can see the animals they’re interested in and then come to the shelter to meet them in person. If one of the dogs or cats makes their hearts flutter, WCRAS will allow participants to bring the pet home for the weekend. After spending the weekend together, the final decision must be made by Monday, June 28, by 6 p.m.
“Come to the shelter to meet the dogs or cats first and then give it whirl,” says Misty Valenta, WCRAS Animal Services Director. “This is the perfect opportunity for those who are not sure about committing to adoption right away. Give it a chance! Our Weekend Whirl is the opportunity to enjoy the companionship a dog or cat offers, and who knows — it could turn into a beautiful new friendship that lasts a lifetime.”

Valenta said the ‘Weekend Whirl’ is expected to be one of their busiest weekends and recommended that interested people reserve their appointments by emailing WCRAS at adoption@wilco.org.

Each adult dog and cat eligible for the Weekend Whirl will be 7-months and older, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, heartworm or FeLv tested, and microchipped. To see the adoptable dogs and cats at Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter, or for more information, visit wilcopets.org.
