September is National Preparedness Month! One of the best ways to protect your family, property and self is by staying informed. You can sign up for emergency alerts in your neighborhood by text, email or phone at warncentraltexas.org.
You may not be with your family when a disaster hits, so it’s important to make an emergency plan with your family ahead of time. Make sure everyone knows how you’ll reconnect if the family is separated. Additionally, build an emergency kit in case you and your family have to evacuate. Here are some things you should include:
-Water (one gallon per person for several days)
-Food (at least a several -day supply of non-perishable food)
-Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio
-Flashlight
-First aid kit
-Extra batteries
-Manual can opener
-Local maps
-Medicine
Your pet is part of your family as well, so don’t forget to build them their own emergency kit that includes:
-Food for several days
-Water
-Collar with ID tag and a harness or leash
-Medicine
-Grooming items
-Sanitation needs
-A picture of you and your pet together
