June is National PTSD Awareness Month

June is National Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness (PTSD) Month. PTSD is a form of anxiety that can be caused after someone experiences extreme trauma, such as being involved in a serious accident, an assault or abuse, a natural disaster, or exposure to combat. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs states that PTSD is the third most common mental condition among veterans in the Veterans Affairs (V.A.) hospital system and estimates that at least 20 percent of the soldiers who have been deployed in the past six years have experienced some form of PTSD.

Symptoms of PTSD range from chronic sleep problems to irritability and hyper-vigilance. People with PTSD might not want to talk about traumatic events and have a general feeling that the world is dangerous. They also might have adverse reactions to crowds, feeling emotional numbness or detachment.

The Williamson County Veterans Services encourages anyone who thinks they might have PTSD to seek help or get medical treatment. Below are some resources available to learn more and help people who are experiencing PTSD.
