Williamson County Commissioners Court Votes on Proposed Maximum Tax Rate and Recommended Budget

On Tuesday, August 4, the Williamson County Commissioners Court unanimously approved a proposed maximum total tax rate not to exceed $0.458719. This is the same as the county’s current total tax rate.  The proposed maximum total tax rate is comprised of the General Fund, Road and Bridge Fund, and Debt Service Fund tax rates. A public hearing will be held on August 25, at 10:15 a.m., to allow county residents to express their opinions before the final tax rate for tax year 2020 is adopted.

The Commissioners Court also unanimously accepted the recommended budgets for the three funds. The recommended FY21 General Fund budget is $218,940,100, a decrease of approximately 1%. The recommended FY 21 Road and Bridge Fund budget is $44,576,568, a decrease of approximately 1.06%. The recommended FY 21 Debt Service Fund budget is $126,845,915 and includes $25 million for debt defeasance to pay down debt early.

The next step in the budget process is for the Commissioners Court to hold budget modification voting sessions. The first will be on Tuesday, August 11 at 10:00 a.m. If needed, a second will be held on Tuesday, August 18. These meetings will allow the members of the Commissioners Court to make changes to the budget before the budget public hearing on Tuesday, August 25, at 10 a.m. The proposed FY 2021 budget is available for residents to review on the Budget Office website, under the section titled “Budget Overview”. The link is www.wilco.org/Departments/Budget-Office/Budget-Overview. A hard copy of the recommended budget can be accessed at the County Clerk’s Office in the Justice Center located at 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Street, in Georgetown.

Leading up to the public hearings, people can publicly comment on the tax rate and budget by signing up for public comment at regularly held Commissioners Court meetings on Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. in the Williamson County Historic Courthouse, located at 710 South Main Street in Georgetown. Any member of the public wishing to appear before the Commissioners Court must fully complete and submit a Public Participation Form to the County Judge's executive assistant or designated staff at least ten minutes prior to the beginning of the Court's meeting. That form can be found online at www.wilco.org/livemeetings under Public Participation Form.
