As temperatures continue to rise in Texas, many will head to lakes, beaches and pools to cool off this summer. Williamson County EMS would like to remind Texans to keep a close eye on children around water as drowning can happen in as little as 20 to 60 seconds in any amount of water. Williamson County EMS would like to remind residents of the following safety guidelines recommended by the National Drowning Prevention Alliance.

1)    Secure the Pool
-lack of barriers around water contributes to a majority of drowning deaths
-make sure there is four-sided fencing around the pool with self-closing, self-latching gates
-use pool safety covers
-have an alarm system to notify when someone goes in and out of the pool area.

2)    Keep an Eye Out
-23% of child drownings happened during a family gathering near a pool.
- Anytime children are around water, stay vigilant and aware
-Keep them under close, constant and capable adult supervision

3)    Take Swim Lessons
-Formal lessons can enhance a child’s basic water safety skills
-lessons reduce the risk of drowning and injuries by 88% for children ages 1 through 4.
4)     Wear a Life Vest
-When used appropriately, life vests can save lives
-Make sure your life vest is tested and approved by the United States Coast Guard
5)     Learn CPR
-Prepare for an emergency by learning hands-only CPR and basic water rescue skills
-Always have a phone nearby and be ready to call 911
