While the fireworks industry has voluntarily limited the sale of stick rockets and missiles with fins or rudders in Williamson County, fireworks are still allowed in parts of Williamson County. Fireworks can be dangerous when not used properly, causing serious burns and eye injuries. Always check with your local fire department/district for recommendations or suggested precautions to follow before deciding to use them, then, follow these safety tips from the Williamson County Fire Marshal Special Operations Division.

Before you shoot:
1. DO NOT LET YOUR CHILDREN BUY FIREWORKS WITHOUT ADULT SUPERVISION
2. Only buy from reliable fireworks sellers
3. Never experiment or attempt to make your own fireworks
4. Store fireworks in a cool, dry place
5. Find a smooth, flat surface, away from the house or other buildings, dry leaves or grass
6. Be sure to have water handy in case of a malfunction or fire
7. ALWAYS HAVE ADULT SUPERVISION

When you’re ready to shoot:
1. NEVER ALLOW CHILDREN TO PLAY WITH OR IGNITE FIREWORKS
2. Always read and follow label directions, warnings and instructions
3. Be considerate of your neighbors
4. Only ignite fireworks outdoors and away from houses and other structures
5. Light only one firework at a time
6. Never try to re-light fireworks that have not fully functioned
7. Never give fireworks to small children, even sparklers cause serious burns
8. Be sure other people are out of range before lighting fireworks
9. Never throw fireworks at another person, vehicle or animal
10. Never carry fireworks in your pocket
11. Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers
12. Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down and place in a metal trash can away from any building or combustible materials until the next day.

The Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter (WCRAS) cautions that some pets can become frightened at the loud sound of fireworks. Below are tips to help your pet through their anxiety.
1. Keep your pet inside.
2. Have music or the TV on.
3. Have a safe place for them to hide if they choose.
4. For dogs, give them a Kong or other chew toy.
5. Thundershirts, Rescue Remedy drops and other calming items may help as well.
6. If the anxiety is severe, check with a veterinarian for medication that may help.
