The Criminal Division of the County Attorney’s Office is responsible for prosecuting all adult misdemeanor criminal offenses in Williamson County. The Criminal Division prosecutes approximately 11,000 misdemeanor cases per year in three County Courts at Law as well as prosecuting Class C misdemeanors in the four Justice Peace Courts in the County.

The Civil Division of the County Attorney’s Office handles a variety of civil matters, including, but not limited to:

• Representation on assigned civil litigation involving Williamson County and defense of civil suits and claims against Williamson County or County officials
• Advice and counsel on requests for legal opinions from elected County officials and other County officials, including employment-related and claim-related question
• Mental health cases / matters
• Misdemeanor bond forfeitures
• Assertion of claims by the County on matters where the County is a claimant, such as contract claims
• Defense and handling of personal injury and property damage claims against the County or County officials
• Public Information Act requests
• Utility right-of-way property damage claims
• Open Meetings Act matters
• Representation of State agencies in elder abuse and guardianship proceedings

The County Attorney’s Office represents the Department of Family and Protective Services (a.k.a. Child Protective Services) in court in its efforts to protect abused or neglected children In Williamson County. Our goal is to provide a safe environment for children during the legal process while providing services that will ultimately lead to a safe, stable family environment in which to return the children.

The County Attorney’s Office is responsible for prosecuting juvenile crime in Williamson County.  A “juvenile” is a child 10 years of age or older and younger than 17 years of age.  Delinquent children are subject to a wide variety of punishments ranging from informal probation to commitment at the Texas Juvenile Justice Division (TJJD).  The County Attorney’s Office works closely with the Williamson County Juvenile Services Department to find just and appropriate solutions for the county’s troubled youth. 

The Hot Checks Division of the Williamson County Attorney’s Office is the clearinghouse for merchants and citizens to report those who write worthless checks. Our office can use the criminal courts system to see that restitution is paid on the checks, check writers are identified and punished, and future crimes are deterred.

The Williamson County Attorney's Office respects the rights of crime victims.  Prosecutors will do everything within their power to ensure that victims have a voice in the courtroom.

Whether you are the victim of a violent crime such as assault or a property crime such as theft or criminal mischief, it is extremely important for you to provide our office with accurate contact information so that the prosecutor assigned to the case can reach you.  Often, the willingness of a victim to testify makes the difference between a trial and the defendant accepting an agreed punishment.

If you are listed as the victim in a crime reported to our office for prosecution, you should be receiving a letter in the mail asking for basic contact information and any out of pocket expenses which you have incurred due to the crime.  Please reply to this letter by fax, phone, or letter as soon as possible.
