If you owe taxes on property that is not your homestead, and you think you won't be able to pay the entire amount before July 1 (this is the date 15% attorney fees accrue on the unpaid balance), there are private companies that offer property tax loans.

These loans offer payment plans and are typically cheaper than incurring the penalty, interest, and attorney fees that accrue July 1. You can find more information by entering "property tax loans" on your internet search engine.

Throughout the state, tax offices must follow the property tax code as it is currently written. Unfortunately, the Texas Legislature was not in session last year when COVID-19 began to affect Texas, and the Governor did not call a 2020 special session to address this issue. They may draft bills during this current session that create payment options for delinquent taxes or other measures that would assist taxpayers. However, they cannot pass any laws that will lower the 2020 property taxes or change the January 31 deadline.
