WILLIAMSON COUNTY WARNS CITIZENS OF IDENTITY THEFT SCAM
October 13, 2004 (Georgetown, TX) – Williamson
County officials are
warning residents of an identity scam that is occurring around the country
involving voter registration records. A caller claims to be with an
organization, such as the elections office, and claims there is something wrong
with the person’s voter registration. The caller asks to verify
information and requests a social security number and date of birth. Do
not give out those numbers. That information can be used to apply for and
receive credit cards in your name, leaving you with the bill.
No cases of this have been reported
in Williamson
County. The
Williamson County Elections Office rarely makes any calls to verify voter
registration information. Persons receiving such a call should ask the
caller to identify themselves and confirm the names of senior elections
staff. For more information or questions, or to report suspicious
calls, please contact the Williamson County Elections Office at
943-1630.
