VOTER REGISTRATIONS ARE ON THE INCREASE IN WILLIAMSON COUNTY

October 1, 2004 (Georgetown, TX) – The number of registered voters in Williamson County is on the increase.  Since the March 13 primary election, Williamson County has added 14,444 new registered voters with approximately 1,000 more expected.  The last day to register to vote or to change your address on your voter registration to vote in the November 2 general election is October 4.  Voter registration applications are available on-line, at libraries and post offices or call 943-1630 to have one mailed to you.

“The phone calls have increased by 80% since the presidential debate last night,” states John Willingham, elections administrator.  “This is a tremendous last minute rush.”

According to Willingham, before the early 1990s, people often would rush in before the registration deadline to update their address or register to vote.  But since the “motor voter” laws were passed in the early 1990s, people have been able to update their voter registration throughout the year while registering their cars, so last minute registrations have not been as prevalent.

“The indication is that many people are being specifically energized by this election,” adds Willingham.

Sample ballots by voting precinct can be found on the Williamson County web site at www.wilco.org under the Elections Department.

Ballots by mail can be received September 3 through October 26.  Early voting runs from October 18 to 29.
