Williamson County School Nurses Head to School Before the Students

August 11, 2004 (Round Rock, TX) – Williamson County school nurses will receive training in bio terrorism, requirements on immunizations and the process for applying for children’s health insurance programs at an all day conference Thursday, August 12.  Approximately 130 school nurses and public health nurses will attend the conference at the Wingate Inn, 1209 North IH 35, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  The conference is sponsored by Williamson County & Cities Health District (WCCHD) and the University of Mary Hardin Baylor College of Nursing.  This the first program of its kind in Williamson County.

“We are doing this for two reasons,” states Cynthia Guerrero, outreach program coordinator for WCCHD.  “The first is that nurses will be able to prepare themselves should we have a potential bio terrorism event.  Second is the State of Texas Nursing Association now will require all nurses to receive certified nursing training in bio terrorism.

Featured speakers include Dr. Ed Sherwood, health authority for WCCHD, Jennifer Jackson, WCCHD emergency preparedness and response coordinator, Lee Schaver, WCCHD immunization program coordinator and WCCHD’s local school nurse coordinators from Round Rock ISD, Taylor ISD, and Georgetown ISD.

“It is a good way for the school nurses to prepare and get the appropriate training before the start of the school year,” added Ms. Guerrero.  “It also is a good way for the school nurses to get to know their public health agency nurses.”
