Williamson County is hosting its own Learn to Fish event in the Southwest Regional Park, 3005 CR 175, in Leander on Saturday, August 28, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Children of all ages will be able to spend time learning various fishing tips and techniques from local experts.
Learn to Fish participants and families will enjoy exhibits from Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) and will be able to interact with Texas game wardens and other conservation professionals. Special guest, Clark Wendlandt, the 2009 Angler of the Year, will be available for a meet and greet opportunity and scheduled technique demonstrations.
Angler hopefuls will be guided through learning stations that emphasize the use of basic tackle, appropriate bait selection, knot tying, boat casting, and water safety. Additional activities such as “backyard bass” will also help participants hone their fishing skills while also teaching them about basic guidelines that promote a conservation ethic for good fishermen. All activities are in preparation for the day’s objective; to catch (and release) fish.
With all the planned activities, one should allow at least an hour or more to fully enjoy the event. Staff from the Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department recommends an early arrival so participants can gain the most from the program. Additional suggestions for a successful outing include wearing loose, comfortable clothing, a hat or visor, and water appropriate shoes rather than flip flops. The use of insect repellent is advised along with sun block and a supply of water to lessen the effects of the August heat.
Williamson County’s Learn to Fish Day is offered as part of the Take Me Fishing Grant recently awarded the parks department from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). In its promotion of area fishing activities, the county hopes to engage a minimum of 2,000 youth and families in recreational boating and fishing by April, 2011. They also will serve as a clearinghouse for cities within Williamson County who wish to hold their own events, so hopeful anglers should watch for future fishing opportunities.
The inaugural Learn to Fish Day event is free and open to the public. No pre-registration is necessary. Upon arrival at the park, all participants will be asked to complete a simple card to register for the activity.
