The Williamson County Commissioners Court awarded the contract for the county’s public safety technology project to SunGard Public Sector headquartered in Lake Mary, Florida. The contract includes a computer aided dispatch system, records management system for law enforcement and fire, software for mobile computer terminals and automatic vehicle location.

The County Health Rankings—the first set of reports to rank the overall health of every county in all 50 states—were released today by the University of Wisconsin’s Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation at a briefing in Washington, D.C. Williamson County ranked first among Texas Counties in the health outcomes category and fifth overall in health factors.

On the first day of early voting on February 16, 1,583 voters cast their ballots for the March 2, 2010 Primary Election. A total of 1,045 voted in person in the Republican primary and 283 voted by mail; and a total of 246 voted in person in the Democratic primary and 9 voted by mail. Each day, the early voting turnout summary from the previous day is updated on the Elections website at www.wilco.org/elections.

Williamson County Precinct 3 Commissioner Valerie Covey gave oral comments to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) panel on Ambient Air Quality Standards for Ground Level Ozone on Tuesday, February 2, in the Moody Ballroom of the Hilton Houston Hobby Airport hotel. Commissioner Covey requested a gradual implementation of any reduction in the ozone standard in order for more timely and accurate scientific data to be evaluated and asked the agency to recognize the role of transport ozone in calculations and implementation of ozone standards.

Williamson County has reorganized several departments this fiscal year in an effort to create a management structure that more closely mirrors standard business practices. Cost centers under the Commissioners Court have been organized into a structure reporting to five senior directors, reducing the number of positions that directly report to the Court. The senior directors are charged with keeping the County Judge and Commissioners Court informed and up to date on daily operations in their areas.

The Commissioners Court approved a budget of $118,056,152 on August 19. On August 26, the court adopted the effective tax rate of $0.4683 per $100 assessed valuation. That rate is two cents lower than the current rate.

The burn ban will continue until the county has had significant rainfall lowering the KBDI for the county.

On March 5, the Texas Transportation Commission approved $10 million in stimulus funding for the expansion of FM 1460/A.W. Grimes between Old Settlers Boulevard and approximately 1,000 feet north of University Boulevard. The state, county, city of Round Rock and a private developer had been working together to secure funding for the project.

A rally was held on April 20 celebrating the unveiling of region-wide public awareness campaign, "Ozone Action Heroes," that encourages residents to commit to three simple, yet heroic, actions to win the battle against air pollution. Air quality measurments from now through October 31 will determine if the county fails the federal test for clean air.
