County Update meeting November 2

Commissioners Lisa Birkman, Precinct 1, and Valerie Covey, Precinct 3, are holding a joint precinct County Update meeting on Monday, November 2, at the Brushy Creek Community Center.  The meeting begins with exhibits of current county projects from 6:30 to 7 p.m., with comments and brief updates from the commissioners and county staff from 7 to 7:30 p.m., followed by answers to written questions from 7:30 to 8 p.m.  For more information, contact Tammy Smith at 733-5380 or tsmith@wilco.org

Brown Santa Kick-off on November 21

The Brown Santa program is ringing in the holiday season with its annual toy drive on Saturday, November 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Wolf Ranch Town Center. Everyone is invited to join in the festivities with refreshments, live entertainment, and photos with Santa. Toy and book donations will continue November 28 to December 20, on Saturdays from 12 to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Brown Santa also has opportunties for volunteers to help with events and distribution. More

Lighting of the Square in Georgetown on November 27

Come out to the Historic Downtown Square at dusk (approximately 6 p.m.) on Friday, November 27, to kick-off the holiday season with the annual Lighting of the Square on Main Street in Georgetown. Gather with friends and neighbors to experience the magic of the holidays with songs by the Austin Carolers as well as warm cookies and hot chocolate. With 5,000 more lights than ever before, this year's Lighting of the Square is sure to be spectacular.  More

Capital Metro board member needed

Now through November 12, 2009, the Williamson County Commissioner's Court will be accepting applications for the County's appointment to the Capital Metro Board of Directors. Applicants must be residents of Williamson County and/or working in the Capital Metro service area. Cell phone registration for emergencies

Residents of the 10-county Capital Area Council of Governments (CAPCOG) region can now register and receiver notifications on their cell phones for emergencies that may affect their homes and businesses or those of their relatives. To receive these public safety messages, go to this website and follow the instructions to add your information into the ENS cell phone registry. More

Census update

The Census Bureau has finished with the first phase of the 2010 Census and is no longer confirming addresses. The next step on the process is that households will receive their Census forms in the mail in March. All households that do not return their Census forms will be visited by a Census representative. Visit with the past at I.O.O.F. Cemetery

On Saturday, November 7, from 4 to 6 p.m. the Williamson Museum will be offering self-guided tours of the I.O.O.F. cemetery where some of Georgetown's finest citizens from days gone by are laid to rest. Tickets are currently available at the Museum and will be available at the cemetery on the day of the tour.

Cowboys, art, and more fun events at the Williamson Museum

Check out the "Cowboy Christmas" activity at the Williamson Museum, 716 S. Austin Avenue, Georgetown, during the next "Hands-on-History" event for kids and families on Friday, November 27, from 2 to 5 p.m.  Also, adults can enjoy speaker Mary Visser, Southwestern University Professor of Art, during the Wednesday, November 11, Salon at Wildfire.  Finally, the Museum's Books for Texans discusses In a Narrow Grave: Essays on Texas by Larry McMurtry on Tuesday, November 17, 7 p.m., in the Hewlett Room of the Georgetown Public Library.  For more information on these activities, contact the Museum at 943-1670 or visit www.williamsonmuseum.org.

Animal shelter offers open house, special interest meeting, and adoption special

In honor of Animal Shelter Appreciation Week (November 1-7), the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter will be hosting an open house on November 5, from 4 to 6 p.m. Those who come out can enjoy refreshments and take tours of the shelter facilities. Also, the Pet Alliance of Central Texas (PACT) invites the public to its November 12 meeting at 6:30 p.m. for those that are interested in reducing euthanasia in healthy, adoptable animals.  Finally, the shelter's Fall Adoption Special will continue due to the high number of animals being housed; cats are $25, kittens are $50 or 2 for $75, and both dogs and puppies are $50.

Lisa Zirkle named Human Resources Director

On Friday, October 30, the Williamson County Commissioner's Court appointed Lisa Zirkle as the Williamson County human resources director. Zirkle was appointed to the position after having been with the county for 13 years as the associate director of human resources and having served as the interim human resources director since the retirement of previous director John Willingham in July. More

Cookie drive for soldiers

As a part of the Adopt-a-Unit program, Precinct 3 is seeking cookie donations for the members of the Combat Aviation Brigade stationed at Fort Hood. Their goal is to send each of the 202 members of the unit home with a dozen cookies along with a hand-written letter thanking them for their services on Veteran's Day (November 11). Williamson County proudly announces Ellery McLanahan as the new tennis pro manager for the Southwest Regional Park Tennis Center.
